History Research Information
Health Careers H.S. - PreAP World Geography/ PreAP World History
Below is the basic information you need to get started on your research. We strongly suggest that you start this summer due to the demands of high school classes and the adjustments you will be making to high school in general. The National History Day website, www.nationalhistoryday.org, will serve as your guide to pursue your research. The theme for 2016-2017 will be posted later this spring or early summer.
Go to the website, www.nationalhistoryday.org and click on CONTEST. This is where you will find all the information necessary for starting your project. Project Examples, Process Paper, Annotated Bibliography, Judging, Evaluation Forms, and Contest FAQs. Other areas on the site will offer you additional information. Please take advantage of all that this website has to offer.
This is an independent research project for all interested students. However, it is a requirement for students enrolled in Pre-AP World Geography and Pre-AP World History. Expectations are high for students enrolled in Pre-AP classes and the history fair is to reflect each student’s dedication to his or her academic success. You may work individually or in a group with the exception of the historical paper category of competition. Group members must be Health Careers students, but they do not have to be in the same class or grade. All rules are included on the website. The end product of your research may be in the form of a paper, project, media presentation, website, or performance. Select the style of presentation, which fits you best.
Follow all the guidelines exactly as indicated in the contest rule book. Our Campus History Fair will take place at the end of the second nine week grading period. Students that place 1st or 2nd will have the opportunity to compete at the San Antonio Area Regional History Day that will take place in late February at Texas A&M San Antonio. Winners at the Regional History Day will advance to the State History Day in early May.
We take great pride in the accomplishments of our students at the Regional, State and National History Fair competitions over the years and look forward to seeing how far you can take your project. Good luck with your research.

Due date will be early October
This is the format that is to be followed when completing your written analysis for Pre AP. You will write the analysis in essay format addressing, in order, the requirements below:
- Complete reference on the book. (This should be the same format you use when citing sources.) Place at the beginning of the report in the top left-hand margin. Ex. Beard, Charles. The Republic. New York: Viking Press, 1943
- A statement regarding the author: who he/she is or was. Why he/she is competent to write on the subject (training or experience). Check biographical dictionaries, etc.
- The range of the work: Both topically and chronologically. What period does it cover? Is it complete in the history of the period, or merely and account of one particular subject? Identify important historic events that impact the story.
- A summary of the contents of the book: This should be the major part of the report -in length, not importance. This should be a discussion of the subject matter of the book, not a mere enumeration of the topics.
- The emphasis of the work: What does the author consider most important of the material he presents? Does he emphasize economic, political, intellectual, social or other factors?
- Point of view or bias: How does the author regard is subject? Is he totally impartial and objective or is he prejudiced one way or another? Does he sympathize with any particular social class or group? Does he reveal his own ideas as to the merits of economic, political, religious, or other practices? What purpose has motivated the writing of this book?
- Material used: Upon what sources is the study based? Has the author used primary or secondary sources or does he/she summarize the research of other scholars? Refer to references in footnotes and in bibliographical material at the end of the book. If this is not available, be sure to note this in your report.
- Contribution and evaluation of book: Why was the book written? How valuable is it to literature on the same subject? Note conflicting views on topics by the writer and how he/she reconciles these views. What is your opinion of this work? What is your point of view on the subject now that you have read the book? What impressed you the most? With what do you agree or disagree? Why? Be sure to support your general comments with specific examples.
- Present the report in good form: Written report format (essay), typed using font size 12, double-spaced, third person, accurate grammar and spelling, etc. Please do not put your report in a folder. Please have a cover page (see below) and staple the pages together in the upper left hand corner.
